Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Amphibia Order: Anura Family: Conrauidae Genus: Conraua Species: C. goliathThe Goliath Frog is one of my favorite frog species. It's the world's largest frog, usually measuring at 12.5 inches in length (about the size of a baby deer!), and can way up to 7 pounds. Goliath frogs are native to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea (in the middle of Africa). They are able to jump 10 feet! Their tadpoles are actually the same size as most other tadpoles. As tadpoles, they feed on a plant known as Dicraeia warmingii, that only grows in the Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. As adults they eat locusts, dragonflies, crabs, small snakes, fish, baby turtles and even other amphibians! Sometimes they even eat bats. Unlike many other frogs, Goliaths lack vocal chords and cannot produce sounds like they normally would during mating season, which takes place from July to August. Their main predators include snakes, Nile Crocodiles, and larger lizards like monitors. It is said that they can live up to 15 years in the wild and 21 years in captivity. However, they rarely breed in captivity. Goliath Frogs face several threats: accelerated habitat loss because of deforestation, being hunted for food, and being collected from the wild for the pet trade. The Goliath Frog is listed as an endangered animal.Attachments:
